Microsoft “announces” it will release a beta of Internet Explorer version 8 in the first half of 2008. What’s new in IE8? It will at least support the web standard more than any previous version of Internet Explorer. IE8 now renders the “Acid2 Face” correctly in IE8 standards mode.

Design is a uniquely powerful JavaScript bookmarklet

Design javascript bookmarklet
Design is a suite of web-design and development assistive tools which can be utilised on any web-page. Encompassing utilities for grid layout, measurement and alignment, Design is a uniquely powerful JavaScript bookmarklet.

Design features the following components:

  • Grid - overlays a highly configurable layout grid over a web-page. Grid can be set to match any set of dimensions, allowing easy development of CSS layouts in the web-browser.
  • Rule - displays rulers on a page, with all the expected features of the rulers found in a desktop design application, including guides which snap to block display elements and origin location control.
  • Unit - allows measurements to be made between any two points on a web-page, giving basic information about each of the points clicked on, and drawing a line on the page for the measurement.
  • Crosshair - draws a crosshair cursor on the page to assist in layout alignment. Cursor information is also presented in a tooltip.

“Follow the thin red line” navigation system

Virtual Cable

Virtual Cable is a unique display for a car navigation system. The driver sees the Virtual Cable image through the windshield. It appears as if suspended over the road, similar to a trolley cable. The image is in true 3D and appears to be a natural part of the landscape. The driver uses only peripheral vision to follow the Virtual Cable.

See some video simulations demonstrating the Virtual Cable.

Flickr introduces stats

Flickr stats

Flickr introduced a new feature for pro members, stats. It gives you all sorts of insight into how people arrive at your photos. If you’re a pro member you can activate your stats now.

Also newly released by Flickr is the new Flickr Uploader 3.0. The all new version for Windows and Mac OS X makes it easy to add titles, tags and descriptions to photos, add them to sets and adjust each photo’s privacy settings. Plus, for the first time ever, you can reorder your photos before uploading by simply dragging them into place!

innerHTML vs. DOM’s appendChild

Some like to DOM their way around. Others prefer the simplicity of innerHTML. Julien Lecomte, of Yahoo!, wrote up his thoughts on the problems with innerHTML.
